These terms cover your use of WordRank at wordrank.net, including the unlimited game, the daily puzzles and archive, the ladder, private rooms, and the Solve Wall. By playing, you accept what is written here. WordRank is operated by an independent solo developer and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Contexto, Semantle, or any other word game.
Using WordRank
WordRank is a free online word-guessing game provided as-is. You may play it for personal, non-commercial entertainment as much as you like — there is no account to create, no subscription, and no limit on how many rounds you finish. You are welcome to share your results, screenshots, and scores anywhere you want, including on social media and in videos or streams, and you may link to any page on the site without asking. What you may not do is interfere with the service for other players, or present the game as your own product.
Nicknames, rooms, and anything you submit
A few parts of the game accept text from you: the nickname you can add to the Solve Wall after solving, the private rooms you create to challenge friends, and the feedback you send in. Keep that text clean. Nicknames that are hateful, sexual, harassing, impersonate someone else, or advertise something will be removed, and nothing obliges us to explain a removal or keep a copy. Do not use a nickname or a room to publish personal information about anybody, yourself included. We may remove any submitted text at any time, and repeatedly abusing these features can cost you access to them.
Acceptable use
Play the game as a person plays a game. Automated scraping, scripted or brute-force guessing, hammering the guess and hint endpoints, and reverse-engineering the site in order to extract the answer list or the underlying vectors are all off limits, as is any attempt to bypass rate limits or solve puzzles with a bot instead of by reading the ranks. Do not copy the site's pages, word lists, or puzzle sets in bulk to build a competing product or to train a model on them. If you are a researcher or a developer who is genuinely curious about how the ranking works, write to us — that conversation we are happy to have, and it goes better than a scraper does.
No warranty
The game is offered "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied. WordRank is entertainment, not a dictionary, a thesaurus, a teaching tool, or professional linguistic advice, and nothing here should be relied on as a definitive statement about what a word means. Semantic rankings are produced automatically from statistical models of real-world text, so a ranking can look wrong, an answer word can turn out to be a poor choice, and neighbouring words can occasionally be surprising or unpleasant even though the list is filtered. Puzzles, ranks, features, and availability may all change without notice, and the service can be interrupted for maintenance or for reasons outside our control. Progress, streaks, and ladder state are kept in your own browser, so clearing your browser data clears them too — we cannot restore them for you.
Content and intellectual property
The underlying word vectors and frequency data come from openly licensed datasets, including FastText embeddings, the Tencent AI Lab Chinese embeddings, SUBTLEX word-frequency lists, and published concreteness ratings; those datasets remain the property of their authors under their own licences. Everything built on top of them — the game design, the code, the curated answer lists, the written guides and blog articles, the visual design, and the WordRank name and logo — belongs to WordRank. Sharing a link, a screenshot, or your score is fine and always has been. Republishing pages, copying articles, or redistributing the word lists and puzzle data is not, and needs written permission first.
Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, WordRank and its operator are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of the game, or for lost progress, lost data, or lost time. Since the service is free, our total liability to you for any claim is limited to nothing more than ceasing to provide it.
Advertising and third-party links
WordRank is funded by advertising, and pages on the site carry ads served by Google AdSense and its partners. We do not choose the individual ads you see, and an advert appearing on the site is not an endorsement of the product behind it. Some pages also link out to other word games, datasets, and articles; those sites have their own terms and their own privacy practices, and we are not responsible for their content. Our privacy policy explains the cookies used for advertising and how to opt out of personalised ads.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, the revised version is published on this page and the date above is updated. Significant changes will be summarised at the top of the page for a period after they take effect. Continuing to play after a change means you accept the revised terms; if you do not, stop using the site. Any dispute arising from these terms is handled under the laws applicable to the operator's place of residence.
